“How many springtails per gallon” is one of the most common questions we get, and it’s also one of the most commonly guessed-at answers in the hobby. The honest answer isn’t a single fixed number.
It depends on your enclosure size, how much waste it generates, and whether you’re seeding a brand-new build or rescuing an established one with a mold or waste problem already underway.
This guide breaks it down by enclosure size and situation, so you’re not guessing or overpaying for more culture than you need or worse, underestimating and ending up with a population too small to keep up.

2. Why There’s No Single “Right” Number
Springtail population needs aren’t just a function of tank volume, they’re a function of how much organic material your enclosure actually produces for them to consume. Two 20-gallon enclosures can have very different needs:
- A lightly stocked, minimal-waste enclosure (a single small gecko, sparse feeding) generates relatively little organic waste, so a smaller population can keep pace comfortably.
- A heavily planted, actively fed enclosure with a larger animal, frequent feeding, and substantial leaf litter generates far more organic material, and needs a proportionally larger population to process it without falling behind.
This is why “springtails per gallon” is a useful starting point, but not the whole picture. Enclosure volume tells you how much space the population needs to cover; bioload tells you how much work the population needs to do.
3. Sizing by Enclosure Size
Under 5 gallons (nano builds, small bioactive bins): A single small starter culture is typically enough. These enclosures have limited substrate surface area, so even a modest population establishes coverage quickly.
5–10 gallons (the most common terrarium size): One standard starter culture is the typical recommendation here. This size range gives a starter population enough room to grow into without being spread too thin on day one.
10–20 gallons (standard vivarium builds): A standard culture works if the enclosure is lightly stocked and you’re willing to let the population grow into full coverage over a few weeks. A large culture, or seeding with two starter cultures at different points in the substrate, gets you to full coverage faster if you’d rather not wait.
20–40 gallons (larger vivariums, paludariums): This is where seeding location starts to matter as much as raw population size. A single culture added at one point in a 30-gallon enclosure takes considerably longer to spread evenly than the same total population split across two or three feeding points. A large culture, or two standard cultures added at different spots, is the more reliable approach.
40+ gallons or bioactive rooms: At this scale, think in terms of staged seeding rather than a single order. Two or more large cultures, added at multiple points across the substrate over the first couple of weeks, establishes more even, faster coverage than trying to seed the entire area from one central point.
4. Sizing by Situation: New Build vs. Existing Problem
Seeding a brand-new enclosure: the population and the bioload grow together. A standard starter culture sized to your enclosure (per the table above) is enough, since there isn’t yet a backlog of waste or mold for the population to catch up on.
Introducing springtails to an enclosure with an existing mold or waste problem: size up. A small starter population added to an enclosure that already has an active mold bloom or waste backlog will take considerably longer to catch up than the same population added to a clean, new build. In this situation, a large or already-established (“booming”) culture gets your population to a workable level faster than a small starter batch left to grow into the problem on its own.
Replacing a crashed culture: treat this the same as an existing-problem scenario. If your previous population crashed, whatever caused that (moisture, temperature, or feeding issue. 5. Signs Your Culture Is Undersized
A few indicators suggest your current population isn’t keeping pace with your enclosure’s needs, regardless of what the sizing table above suggested:
- Mold or fungal growth that keeps returning despite an established springtail population
- Visible food or waste sitting for several days without noticeable population activity around it
- A population that looked active initially but appears to have thinned out significantly over a few weeks without an obvious cause
- An enclosure that’s grown substantially in bioload since the population was first seeded (a new, larger animal added, or significantly increased feeding)
If any of these apply, the fix is usually adding a fresh culture on top of the existing population, rather than waiting for the current one to somehow catch up on its own.
6. Should You Order More Than the Table Suggests?
In most cases, no — oversizing a culture doesn’t provide much additional benefit for a well-matched enclosure, and the population will naturally regulate to what the available food supply supports regardless of how many you start with. The exceptions where ordering more makes sense:
- You’re seeding a large enclosure (20+ gallons) and want faster full coverage rather than waiting several weeks for a smaller population to spread

- You’re seeding multiple separate enclosures and it’s more cost-effective to order a larger culture and split it than to place multiple separate orders
