Dalmatian Isopods for Sale: Six Varieties to Choose From
Looking for Dalmatian isopods for sale? We offer six popular varieties of this classic spotted isopod: Dalmatian, Orange Dalmatian, Orange, Calico, Lava and Whiteout. All of them are Porcellio scaber morphs, which means you get head-turning color and pattern along with one of the hardiest, most forgiving isopod species in the hobby. They’re ideal for beginners, bioactive terrariums and breeders who want a colorful colony.
Six Porcellio scaber morphs
Porcellio scaber Dalmatian is the original spotted favorite. Pale spots against a darker body give it its playful look, and it’s one of the best starter isopods you can choose.
Orange Dalmatian combines warm orange tones with the signature spotted pattern. It’s bright, bold and easy to spot against dark soil and leaf litter.
Orange is the variety to pick if you want clean, vivid color. Its warm orange tones bring a splash of brightness to any terrarium or isopod display.
Calico has a mixed, patchwork look with blended colors, so no two animals look exactly alike. It’s a fun variety for keepers who enjoy variety and surprise within a single colony.
Lava isopods is a deeper, darker variety with a dramatic look that stands out in a naturalistic setup. Collectors love it for its bold contrast.
Whiteout isopods is a pale variety with a striking, ghostly look. Against dark substrate, it’s one of the easiest to see and one of the most photogenic.
Why choose Dalmatian isopods?
Porcellio scaber is famously tough, active and quick to settle in. These isopods work hard as a clean-up crew, eating decaying leaf litter, rotting wood and leftover food, and keeping your bioactive terrarium fresh and balanced. They climb well, so you’ll often see them exploring bark and decor.
Care is simple and the same for all six varieties. Use a substrate of organic soil, leaf litter and rotting hardwood, and add plenty of cork bark or other hides. Keep a moisture gradient, with one side damp and the other drier, and make sure the enclosure has good airflow. Offer a calcium source such as cuttlebone and a varied diet of leaves, wood and occasional vegetables or protein. Avoid waterlogged substrate. Because the varieties share the same care, you can build a multi-colored collection without learning new rules.
